Conductor Thomas Fortner: Symphony orchestra brings people together, crossing cultural boundaries.

Conductor Thomas Fortner is talking about a new production he is working on which is part of an event that's exploring hopeful answers to climate change. In this way he is hoping to bring the arts and sciences together. "It will kind of like a Rite of spring, on a farm, in the mud, with a campfire. Like Woodstock meets Stravinsky..." says Thomas. South Dakota has been a wonderful place for him to work and has given him the opportunity to learn a lot about programming in general and what a symphony orchestra can do and can mean to bring people together and to cross cultural boundaries. It is a great way for orchestras to explore how they could be relevant to their community. It is good to find a program that reaches people and resonates with them based on what is special about their situation. He mentions the Dakota music project that was started 15 years ago to address racial prejudice. Hear more about his work at South Dakota Symphony and also his love for flying.
