"I have a theory that we love blue porcelain so much because you rarely get blue in nature. The places you see blue is in the sky and in the ocean. And you can never really touch the sky or the horizon of the ocean. So blue is the colour of that, that cannot be touched, yet with blue porcelain you can hold it in your hands." says Michael Chandler, Ceramic artist in Cape Town. Michael is talking about how his love affair with ceramics started and where he gets his inspiration for his artworks from. He also does commissions with the idea that he could create a porcelain artwork for someone to commemorate a special occasion or a capture a precious memory. Michael has done research on the origins of blue painted ceramics and he is inspired by historical information to create his own works of art.
