Conroy Cupido- When you do sing, you are conveying emotion, you are telling stories.
"I wanted to highlight to singers how important it is that, when you do sing, you are conveying emotion, you are telling stories." says Conroy Cupido, Associate Professor of Classical singing at the North West University in South Africa. Conroy is talking about a project he has done where he wanted to make singers aware that by using certain elements in singing, meaning of songs are communicated "Besides the fact that you annunciate, you also have power in the prosodic elements of your voice. So how do you shape the colour of the sound, how do you play with word painting? How do you play with vibrato?". This fascinating project will be available for downloading from July and even though it is aimed for scholars, it would also be interesting to anybody who have an interest in music and art.
Hear more about how Conroy started in music and how his career path led to Dallas in the US, where he lived for 10 years before joining the faculty of Music in Potchefstroom at the University. Conroy also expresses his wishes for the future and I am joining him in wishing for more Opera companies in South Africa. Conroy, may your wishes come true!
