Art, Opera, and Expression: An Interview with Christina Baader
In this interview, I had the pleasure of speaking with the incredibly talented Christina Baader—mezzo-soprano and painter—surrounded by her stunning artworks. Christina shares how her journey in art and music began in early childhood, when she would instinctively reach for paintbrushes as a toddler and later began playing the piano. Growing up in a home filled with music and creativity, she felt an innate drive to express herself through both painting and singing.
Christina went on to formally study piano—an instrument she deeply loves—but eventually realized that her desire to express emotion through the human voice was even greater. It was this profound need that led her to pursue opera singing, a path that would allow her to fully explore her artistic voice.
Though she began studying voice later in life, her dream was clear: to sing Carmen. With great dedication, patience, and passion, that dream became a reality—Christina has since portrayed Carmen several times on stage, a testament to her unwavering spirit.
Alongside her musical career, Christina continues to paint, drawing inspiration from the emotional landscapes of human experience. In the interview, she reflects on her paintings of Tosca and Turandot, exploring the pivotal moments when these operatic heroines faced life-altering decisions. Her artwork emerges from a place of deep empathy and awareness, offering insight into both personal and collective journeys.
Christina speaks passionately about the role of art in life and education. To her, art is a vessel for connection, love, resilience, and expression. It opens doors to new languages, roles, and worlds—both on stage and beyond—and she treasures the constant learning it brings.
What touched me most was Christina’s deep understanding of timing, her thoughtful approach to creativity, and the soulful way she connects with others through her work. With a voice that moves and paintings that speak, Christina Baader is not only a gifted artist, but a truly beautiful soul.
